Gill Key very kindly offered to host this event in her beautiful gardens at Lychgate House. Unfortunately the weather was not so kind to us, and so with huge thanks to Gill and recognition of the huge effort that she had put into getting her garden all set for the great day, we turned to plan B and hurridly set up the Jubilee Tea in the Parish Hall along with a games room for the the children in the Reading Room.
A vote of thanks was offered from Rob Watkin, our Parish Council Chairman; Jack Stenhouse gave thanks for the 70 years of dedicated service of our Majesty the Queen and proposed 3 cheers. We all joined together in singing the national anthem. Emma Key then cut her magnificent Jubilee Cake, which was then offered around the hall.
Approximately 130 people attended the event and there were cakes and tea for all!
At 4pm, those still in the hall, approximately 2/3 of all the guests who attended, were invited to be part of a memorial photo at Lychgate house and were then able to tour the gardens.
This was a truly memorable Ellastone occasion and lovely to meet some new residents and some of our more ‘mature’ residents post COVID lockdown.
Leftover cakes were donated to Barrowhill Hall Residential and Nursing Home after the event.
There was no entrance fee but queen of the raffle, Hilda Tideswell did roaring trade, and there were also several collection boxes around the hall. There will be an official announcement of how much was raised and its final destination once the accounts have been finalised.
There was also an exhibition in the church illustrating the 7 decades of Her Majesty the Queen’s reign. Local items of memorabilia and photographs were on display.
Enormous thanks go to all those involved in the planning, the preparation, the setting up, the running, the washing up and the clearing up of the event – obviously too many to mention by name. Of course, a huge thank you to so many of you who made cakes for the event.
